The Reading Pen Specification Checklist

A fill-in template of every hardware decision in a reading pen program — OID generation, platform, tip, buttons, storage, display, microphone, earphone, battery and ports — with the real shipping range used as worked examples. Answer these before requesting a quote.

1. OID generation and content

  • OID 2.0 continuity (existing libraries), or new OID 3.0 program?
  • How many titles, pages and audio languages now and over the next 12 months?
  • Fixed single title, or an expandable multi-level library?

2. Chip platform

The shipping range uses SONIX 95303 across most models, SONIX 73001 in the Q8 flagship, AK1053C in the fixed-content F8 and AK1060L in the display models Y6 and KF1. Buyers rarely choose the chip directly; the platform follows the feature tier and should be named in the quotation, never hidden.

3. Tip and housing

  • Large child-friendly tip for preschool and less precise pointing (B1, B2, L5, P2, T2, Y6, KF1).
  • Small precise tip for school-age textbook work (Q6, K7).
  • Housing character (cartoon bear, fish, tulip, rose, matte, metallic), colors and surface finish.

4. Buttons and controls

Counts in the current range run from two front buttons (B1) through three (Q6), four (B2, K7), five (F8, L5, Y6), six split front/side (KF1) to seven (T2) and five on the Q8 (two front, three side). Preschool needs few, distinct buttons; dense curricula use more.

5. Storage

  • External TF slot for libraries that expand after sale (K7, L5, P2, T2, Y6).
  • Built-in TF on B1, B2, Q6 and the Q8 (up to 32 GB).
  • Soldered NAND for locked single-title programs (F8) — no socket.

The quotation names every part you will receive

A model name is not a specification. Platform, tip, cell and charging type should be written into the quote and frozen into the BOM before pilot production.
  • Chip platform named in the quotation, locked in the BOM
  • Tip size and housing matched to learner age
  • 300-600 mAh cells and charging type confirmed
  • No silent substitutions across repeat batches
Decision Sheet

The ten rows every quotation should lock

Fill the right column with your engineering contact — these are the values that prevent “same model, different batch” surprises.

Program

OID generation 2.0 continuity / 3.0 new program / 4.0 review
Content roadmap Titles, pages and languages over the next 12 months
Content model Fixed single title / expandable TF library

Hardware

Platform Named in quotation, locked in BOM
Tip & housing Large child-friendly / small precise; character & finish
Buttons Count and layout matched to learner age
Display None / dot-matrix / 2.4-inch TFT video
Audio I/O Speaker, microphone, earphone jack, volume cap

Commercial

Power Cell capacity (300-600 mAh) and charging type
Books & packaging Coded books, accessories, color box or carton
Market & documents Destination country and document scope

6. Display and multimedia

  • No screen: the majority of the range, lowest price tiers.
  • 132x32 dot-matrix (Y6) or wide 160x48 dot-matrix (KF1) for status and structured programs.
  • 2.4-inch 320x240 color TFT with video playback (Q8) — the flagship multimedia tier.

7. Audio, microphone and earphones

All models play through a speaker; display-tier and flagship models add a front microphone for repeat-and-record practice. Earphone jacks are present on B2, L5, P2, T2, Y6, KF1 and Q8 and matter for classrooms and focused one-to-one use. Maximum volume limits are firmware-configured per age group.

8. Battery and power

Rechargeable cell capacities across the range run from 300 mAh (F8) through 350 mAh (Q6, K7, L5, P2), 400 mAh (T2, Y6, KF1), 450 mAh (B1, B2) to 600 mAh (Q8). KF1 uniquely integrates a wireless charging coil; the rest charge over Mini USB or Micro USB depending on the model.

9. Books, accessories and packaging

  • Coded books, flashcards, stickers or posters produced in-program or via a nominated printer.
  • Cables, manuals, earphones and gift/color-box or neutral carton requirements.
  • Logo printing, surface treatment and private-label artwork deadlines.

10. Market and documents

Destination country drives the document pack — CE/RED with EN71/EN62115, FCC with CPC/ASTM F963, RoHS/REACH, UKCA or PSE — confirmed per model. See the certification guide.

How To Use It

Checklist to named SKU in four steps

1

Fill the ten rows

Copy the decision sheet and answer what you know; unknowns are engineering's job.

2

Match an anchor

We name the closest shipping model for every scenario.

3

Sample the real unit

Samples validated against recognition, audio, drop and runtime.

4

Lock the BOM

Configuration frozen at pilot; repeat orders stay identical.

Should I specify the chip myself?
Usually no — name the functions, display and battery life you need and let engineering name the platform, but require it to be stated in the quotation and locked in the BOM.
Can earphone support be added to any model?
Jack placement and board layout vary by model; start from a model that already includes the jack (B2, L5, P2, T2, Y6, KF1, Q8) rather than assuming it can be added.
What is the safest storage choice for a book series?
External TF (K7, L5, T2) when levels release over time; soldered NAND (F8) for one fixed licensed title.
Can volume be limited for a specific age group?
Yes. Maximum-volume behavior is firmware-controlled and specified per program and market.
