Reading Pen R&D, Engineering & OID Customization

The engineering work behind an OEM/ODM program: OID sensor and recognition tuning, SONIX/AK chip platform selection, proprietary PCBA, acoustics and child-safe volume, low-power firmware, housing and tooling design, functional prototypes and pilot validation — with an honest feasibility gate before any commitment.

Feasibility reviewed before anything is quoted as custom

The first engineering question is always whether a shipping model already covers the requirement. Colors, logo, preloaded audio and configuration stay on the fast OEM path; genuine gaps in housing, sensor or electronics enter a structured ODM feasibility review instead of being promised as easy customization.
  • Housing, tooling and child-safe tip feasibility review
  • Proprietary PCBA and OID sensor integration evaluation
  • Firmware, prompts, volume protection and battery behavior
  • OID code, print and audio-pipeline engineering
Capabilities

What the engineering team handles

OID sensor & recognition

OID 2.0 continuity programs and OID 3.0/4.0 development: sensor selection, code recognition tuning across paper stocks and point-angle tolerance.

Chip platforms

SONIX 95303/73001 and AK1053C/1060L platform selection, lifecycle and supply assessment for the target price band.

Proprietary PCBA

Board design, layout and revision control around OID heads, microphones, speakers, charging, TF/NAND storage and LCD options.

Acoustics

Speaker selection, cavity tuning, recording quality and child-safe maximum-volume behavior for classroom and home use.

Firmware & power

Low-power firmware, button mapping, prompt languages, auto power-off, charge management and playback behavior.

ID, structure & tooling

Housing form factors, large or precision tips, drop-resistant structure, surface treatment and new-tool development.

OID content pipeline

OID code generation, coded-print specifications, audio recording coordination and pen-to-book matching as one engineered system.

Compliance support Pre-compliance review and document coordination for CE/RED, EN71/EN62115, FCC/CPC, RoHS and related requirements by market.
Development Flow

From engineering question to validated product

1

Brief intake

Learner age, functions, content plan, target market and commercial stage collected in one structured pass.

2

Platform screening

The 11 shipping models are checked first; gaps are documented before ODM is proposed.

3

Design & prototype

Housing, PCBA, firmware and OID print-trial work produces functional prototypes.

4

Validation

Prototypes are tested against the agreed checklist — recognition, audio, drop, battery and book matching.

5

Pilot transfer

The validated design moves into pilot production with a documented build procedure.

Honest no-go answers are part of the service

Not every requested customization is technically sound or commercially worth tooling. When a requested chip is end-of-life, a speaker cannot reach safe volume in a chosen housing, an LCD drains the battery below target, or a requirement can be met with an existing model, engineering says so in writing — with alternatives and reasons — before money is spent.
  • 50 engineers across hardware/PCBA, firmware, acoustics, ID/structure and OID content
  • OEM sample build typically 7-15 working days from a locked configuration
  • New-tool ODM first articles typically 35-45 working days
  • Pilot transfer only after a documented build procedure
  • OID 4.0 work continues in the R&D center alongside 3.0 production
Engineering FAQ

R&D and customization questions

Can you develop a brand-new pen housing for us?
Yes. New ID, structure and tooling are evaluated in the feasibility review, drawing on 30+ maintained molds. Simple color and logo changes stay on the OEM path; only genuinely new shapes enter tooling.
Do you support OID 2.0 libraries as well as 3.0?
Yes. The KF1 specialist model maintains OID 2.0 continuity for existing book libraries, while new programs are typically built on OID 3.0, with OID 4.0 work progressing in the R&D center.
Can you tune maximum volume for child safety?
Yes. Acoustic output limits, prompt sounds and playback curves are firmware-controlled and defined against the target age group and market requirements.
How do we protect custom design details?
Mutual NDA precedes technical exchange, and project-specific IP, tooling and exclusivity arrangements are defined in the development agreement before work starts.
Will engineering tell us if our idea is not viable?
Yes. A written feasibility assessment with go, modify or no-go routing is the first deliverable of any ODM discussion.

Put the engineering question through a structured review

Send drawings, button lists, a reference pen, book sample or content plan. The first response states which shipping model fits — or whether genuine ODM work is justified.
