Shipping Reading Pens from China: Batteries and Documents
Why batteries change the freight plan
Lithium batteries are regulated as dangerous goods in transport because of fire risk. Reading pens typically ship with small rechargeable cells (the current range uses 300-600 mAh cells) installed in the device — usually categorized as batteries packed with equipment rather than loose cells — but carriers still require supporting documents and compliant packaging.
The documents to know
- UN38.3 — the United Nations test summary for the battery type, demonstrating it passed the required test series; expected for air and most sea handling.
- MSDS — the material safety data sheet for the battery, requested by forwarders and customs.
- IEC 62133 — a safety standard for sealed secondary cells; report availability is confirmed with the cell supplier and destination rules.
- Commercial documents — commercial invoice, packing list and, depending on terms, certificates of origin.
These are transport documents; product approval marks (CE, FCC and similar) are a separate workstream — see the certification guide.
Incoterms: what changes between them
- EXW — you or your forwarder take responsibility from the factory gate; maximum buyer control, maximum buyer work.
- FOB-style terms — the most common arrangement for bulk: delivery onto the vessel at the named Shenzhen-area port, with export-side handling coordinated by the seller.
- CIF / DDP-style terms — more responsibility sits with the seller (insurance, or delivery duty paid); available for qualified programs and worth discussing on a case-by-case basis.
